Richard Wentworth is our link artist for the good the bad an the ugly. He's a new British photographer (who for many years lived in the kings cross area) since the end of the 1970s and studied at horsey college of art in north London from 1965 and then went to the royal college of art. From 2002 to 2010 he was a 'master of drawing' at the Ruskin school of drawing and fine art, oxford university and was head of the sculpture department at the royal college of art, London from 2009-2011.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The topic the good the bad and the ugly is where you take several images and categorise them into what you believe are the good, bad and ugly.
THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY
The good the bad and the ugly homework
To complete this homework I went to a few near by locations to take images and categorise them based upon how they looked.
THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY
www:I have taken some good images demonstrating (in my opinion) The good the bad and the ugly within school and at home. EBI:I should try to take images of more colourful things and maybe not do each one as close up e.g take an image of a chair similar to Richard Wentworth.
3 Artists
For this work I had to pick three landscape photographers/artists and write a bit about them and their careers in photography.
charles sheeler
Charles sheeler was an american painter and commercial photographer who takes environmental pictures of quite rustic places such as factories and fuel burning buildings .Here are a few examples of his work.
Charles was known as one of the master photographers of the 20th century. He also attended the Pennsylvanian museum school of industrial art from 1900 to 1903 and after he attended the Pennsylvanian academy of fine arts. From 1926 to 1931 Sheeler worked as a freelance photographer, shooting celebrity portraits and fashion photography for vogue and vanity fair.in 1939-40 he traveled across the country on assignment for a magazine, photographing locations for a series of paintings on the theme of power. These were depicted icons of American industry such as airplanes, power plants and dams, from then on he started photographing more of these types of images above.
Berenice abbott
Berenice abbott was an American photographer best known for her portraits between the wars 20th century cultural figures, new York city photographers of architecture and urban design of the 1930s, and science interpretation in the 1040s to 1960s.Berenice was born in Ohio where she later went on to attend Ohio state university for two semesters. She first became involved in photography in 1923, when she was hired as a dark room assistant, she later said "I took to photography like a duck to water".In 1921 her first major works was in an exhibition in the Parisian gallery. After she exhibited her work in another gallery in 1926 she started her own studio. After a short time in Berlin studying photography she returned to Paris in 1927 and started a second studio.Above is some of her work.
I really liked these images because of the way she has made them black and white and the way she has framed each of them (angled them).
Jan Dibbets
Jan Dibbets is an Amsterdam-based dutch conceptual artist. He had his first solo exhibition in 1965 at Amsterdam gallery and subsequently abandoned painting in 1967. At the same time he visited London and met with several artists working with land art.he returned to Amsterdam incorporated land-art based theories into his work and began to use photography as a "dialogue between nature and cool geometrical design by rotating the camera on its axis".His work in the dutch pavilion in 1972 gave him an international reputation. Here is some of his work.
I really like these images because they are quite simplistic but at the same time there seems to be a-lot going on in them.
www:I have written a good description of the three photographers that I like and included lots of factual information. Ebi: I could have included information as why I like them as photographers and why I have picked these images.
Rule Of Thirds
The rule of thirds is when you imagine your picture divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. These lines suggest four options for placing the centre of your image at a good composition. When an image is set up up using the rule of thirds it is generally more appealing for the eye to look at.
Before
After
www:I edited some pictures using the rule of thirds grid to really show how much better am image looks when this is used. EBI: I should include more examples of the rule of thirds and add more of a detailed explanation of what it is.
Framing
Framing is our next topic because in enviroment photographs we generaly focus on several different things within the image, and framing helps us to focus on specific details.
John Divola
John Divola is our link artist for framing. He Is an American contemporary visual artist and one of his most famous pieces of work is called Zuma beach. In his series of Zuma beech 1977 he used deserted houses at the beech and spayed the walls with graffiti and generally made them see completely wrecked. In these photographs the aim for Divola was to ''attempt to develop a practice in which there could be no distinction between the document and the original''. This series of work he had done is framed well, therefore we had ago at creating some of out own framed responses, in these we focused on detail within the frame.
Initial Response
Second response
With this second response we showed what are worked looked like without the frame as well as with it.
www: I managed to get several examples of framing and images with and without the frame and detailed images within the frame. EBI:Try to capture more interesting shots in more interesting areas.
The formal elements
The formal elements is a selection of different styled photographs in the environment around me. Some of these image styles i have worked on previously. For example movement and perspective.
Perspective Negative space Layers
Pattern Texture Scale
Movement
Contrast
Focus/DOF
Colour Tone Balance
www: I captured all twelve of the required image sales successfully EBI:maybe next time when taking contrast images don't involve a person as we want it to be environmental.
Negative Space
Negative space is when you take an image with usually a building in it or something quite simplistic however, you leave a large area around it blank, a few examples of this are below.
Matthieu Venot
Matthieu Venot is a French, abstract photographer who has closely worked with taking several negative space images. These images are simplistic but effective especially with the use of colour. He is our link artist fro this topic here are three examples of his work.
Initial response
www:I took plenty of negative space shots which really stand out, the use of contrast and brightness makes the image seem more interesting. EBI:Maybe show some more versatility within my work to show how effective negative space can be.
Texture
Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind is an American photographer who works closely with detailed and textured images. He particularly like to work with flat surfaces to create a new independent of the original subject. These are a few examples of his work.
Initial response
www:I have taken some detailed, close up and textured shots that show a variety of contrast in my environment. EBI: I could of included more colour within these images and also a better variety of subjects.
Close up abstraction
Here I picked a few images from all across my environment page and had to select 1 word I thought would best describe them.
peeling
splintered
light
metals
blue
transparent
Textured
colour
black and white
I later picked three of my words from the close up abstraction work and created three contact sheets displaying 20 images related to its title. examples are below.
Black and white
Metal
Blue
www:All together I have three contact sheets displaying various images to do with their title above, all of which are relevant and intresting EBI:Possibly try to take more detailed images for these contact sheets.
Close up and far away
Close up and far away is where you take a series or images focusing on a specific detail within each image, here are a few examples I have taken below.
initial response
Second response
Blue
Metal
Black and White
Homework
For this homework I went to Alexandra Palace where I look many diffetent photographs using what I have learnt from my close up and far away section of my environment page. Below are the images I took!
