REFLECTION GALLERY
Mirror reflections
Sebastian Magnani
Sebastian Magnani is a photographer from Switzerland who takes a wide range of photos across various different subjects, one of his pieces was reflections and is something that I will be taking inspiration from as I am going to be taking my own reflection images similar to these. He travelled to different locations and using a circular mirror he thenplaced the mirror onto the floor and without getting the camera in the shot he successfully got two images in one change reflection of the sky against the Floor of the location.
First response
Below are some examples of my reflections work, for these I have placed a mirror on the ground position somewhere that I think makes an interesting reflection and looks good in contrast to the background.I have included three of my favourite images from the photos I have taken and edited them to make them stand out however, I have also included the other images in a contact sheet.
Artist and Me
This is one of my images I have taken for this unit of work against a piece that was created by Sebastian Magnani. For this image I have tried to recreate a similar thing by placing the mirror on the floor in leaves/trees and using the mirror capturing a shot of above, meaning I have two images in one. However in my image I thought it was better in black and white and I used a rectangular mirror.
|
This is another one of my images that I have taken under the work mirror refection by Sebastian Magnani. I have used a square mirror for this work and placed it on a broken piece of wood for the background and in the mirror there is the trees above acting as two images in one. This is similar to the link artist as he has focused on the trees in the mirror and the leaves/ground around it.
www:I have clearly followed the same idea that the link artist had in terms of the way the pictures I have taken look and I have given several examples of this.
EBI: I think I could have taken a few more images in more interesting locations to show diversity within my pictures. |
Reflection in shape and colour
Tamara Lorenz
This is my new scheme of work, reflection in shape and colour. For this section I will be using coloured card to create images similar to the ones below created by our link artist Tamara Lorenz. Tamara is a German artist who creates various constructions and photographs them to utilise their abstract properties. I have created many first responses demonstrating my interpretation of this work.
First response
This is my first response to reflection in shape and colour and I have tried to use different shapes in my images which I made using different pieces of coloured card. I tried layering the card to give the images a more textured look. I even tried cutting out several different shapes including puzzle pieces really liked the idea of having them fit together when made into gift. I also try to use contrasting colours to make the images stand out even more.
Edits
Here are some edited images of the different shapes I made using different pieces of coloured card to take inspiration from the link artist. Some of these images have been slightly edited for example changing things like the brightness, tone, saturation and contrast.
Second Response
9 Square Gifs
Here are some examples of nine square gifts, this is when nine different gifs made from a geometric shapes and bright colours have been placed together to form a large square of gifs. I really like this idea however wasn't able to achieve this other didn't include/make enough gifs using the different shapes and card.
Below are some gifs I have made using photoshop, to show a more creative side to this scheme of work however, I wanted to keep it simple therefore only using three shapes and Basic colours as I wanted it to seem nicer on the eye.I also showed the process behind my images when I am making them by taking screen shots of the process.
Here are the steps as to how I made these gifs on photoshop, with a full explanation in case anyone would like t have a go at creating some themselves.
www: I have provided examples of my work using coloured card and created gives also giving examples of how to create it
Ebi: I could involve more examples of my work and use more colours as red is the main one.

Distorted Reflection
Antonio Gutierrez
Antonio Gutierrez is a photographer who for this work focused on taking images of a models features distorted through water, for this he took different types of glasses and filled them with water, he then placed these in front of the models face where he wanted the main distortion to take place and took these images. For this work he looked at turning them black and white which I really like as I think it makes the images look much more professional but also makes the distortion in the image stand out, I have tried to do the same thing below also making my images back and white.
First Response
This is my first response to distorted reflection, I looked at different angles and when editing I looked at the certain points in the image that were in focus and the background out of focus to make the images stand out more. Also making certain features of the model stand out by having them hold the glass of water quite close up to their face. This worked well and I even looked at different levels at which I could take the different photos.
Edits
These are my favourite images that I have taken for this unit of work and I edited them on photoshop, making them black and white and upping the contrast so that the images really stand out and are similar to what the link artist has achieved with their images. I also used the radial blur tool making some of the background blurred and the model in focus drawing more attention to the distortion. This is an extremely effective tool.
Homework
This is my distorted reflect homework, for this I used two of my siblings as models and had taken different glass cups filled with water placing them at different angles to make their faces look distorted. I also made the images black and white to seem similar to the link artist but also as I think I works much nicer and appears clearer. I also liked the way that I got the background to seem slightly out of focus again highlighting the main feature of the image.
Second response
For the second response I took sheets of coloured acrylic and using a plastic container filled with water, I placed the acrylic in the bowl and from different angles I took these images.I also used a torch and mirror which I placed the bowl of water on top of to magnify the colours reflected in the water and the overall reflection of all the acrylic sheets. This worked well and I produced several different contact sheets from it.
Edits
Here are some of my favourite edits which I had completed on photo shop again playing around with things like the brightness, contrast and a saturation until I was happy with the final images. These are the final images that I believe are the best out of that entire shoot.

V&A Exhibition
These are some of my favourite images that I have taken at the exhibition of some of the sculptures/abstract art when we walked around in our free time. I really liked the idea of the old-fashioned images showing in the first image on the left-hand side. Another thing I really liked was the idea of the balloons inside the cube shaped box. I like how this creative illusion but also showed how powerful sculptures can be and allow you to use your imagination. This exhibition also links to the Tim walker images.
I really liked how different some of these sculptures were, they were things that I haven't particularly see before and I thought it was interesting how people came up with these ideas an bought them to life especially as they include such intricate details and have probably being worked on were very long time.
Tim Walker
At the v&a exhibition we looked at the Tim Walker wonderful things exhibition and below I have photographer some of it. In the first room photographed below, 100 photographs from a range of projects provide viewers who might be unfamiliar with Walker's work a chance to see the surreal inventions for which he is known. The photographs here are separated into thematic groups.
Some images are photographs of celebrities such as David Attenborough Anthony Joshua and Tilda swinton.Walker makes each of the shoots quite different, from the models to the settings of the images, he is bringing his creative ideas to life. Walker also creates a contrast between the models and the backgrounds, placing them in what some may say generally neutral outfits. The images of the celebrities confirms my impression of them for example, Tilda Swinton as his photographs of her seem quite weird/very imaginative, this is an impression I would say I have already had of her.

Behind the scenes
in the film at the end of the first room of the exhibition I noticed the way the films make the models feel more comfortable within the shoot. You also gain an inside to his thoughts and ideas. behind the images and means you see what is going through his mind and all his ideas and developments. Distortion
The distortion created by Tim walker has a strong effect on his work and the images created seems like they have been taken through a fish eye lens or as though it has ben magnified. Some of the there images also look slightly blurred or layered to create a dizzy effect for the person looking at the image. |
Props
The props used in the images has an impact on his work and brings the images to life creating a more imaginative sense and the idea of layers within some of the images. The impact here makes the photographs more compact however also hectic as their can often be lots going on. Narrative
Throughout each shoot Walker is illustrating a story in nearly every piece he creates. For example the design and layout of some rooms together with the images makes you feel as if you are taking part in one of his surreal shoots and guides you through his world. |
Patterns,Structure and Reflections
I have taken several images for my first response in this scheme of work, which is looking at buildings or different places, for example I went to the v&a exhibition and took images of the reflections and patterns within the outside of the building. I looked at things like plants/Objects within the grounds and how they happen position, also how I could create illusions based on angles. I also looked at several of the windows to see how symmetrical these one and what patterns I could see within them. These are shown below in the contact sheets.
First response
Did the contact sheets shown several of my images that I've taken at the V&A exhibition to Think about how patterns, structure and reflections are presented here.
Edits
For my edits I have used images of the building we looked at at the V&A exhibition, I specifically looked at angles and how the buildings looked in the camera frame, these were also edited on photoshop to make the images standout and catch the only of someone looking from any distance. Ask this building had amazing structural factors I thought it would be perfect to include in a collection my favourite images.
Second response
This is my second response, for this I used my school as a location and again tried to focus on different angles of building/items that one being reflected. I don't feel that's the second response was as good as the first one based on the fact that the location of the first response was better and provided more patterns, structure and reflections, however I do still like some of the images are taken for my second response.
Edits
These are the edits that I have chosen to add as I think thy are the strongest images to represent reflection, pattern and structure. They have also been slightly edited on photoshop yo make certain features stand out. For example in the first picture on right I changed the saturation to make me ripples in the water stand out more and this linked back to both reflection and pattern.
For this image I tried to capture both the reflection in the window and pattern/structure as the frame of the window is symmetrical.
|
With this image above I wanted to focus on reflection of the water and how the light is reflected onto it but also the pattern aspect of the image due to the splashes in the water

www: I have provided several images showing patterns and reflections in buildings focusing on several angles and symmetry.
Ebi: For this work I would improve my second response and possibly go to more interesting building and locations

Distorted Reflections and Faces
Homework
First response
For this work I continued distorted reflection using water and different glasses, I took a few different people and using items such as a wine glass or vase, held it up against their face to show how water can change the persons appearance, and make certain facial features larger or smaller. This worked really well others able to get many more images showing how water can really distort specific features. This was even more effective in back and white is it highlighted the main areas of distortion.
Edits
These are my favourite homework images which I edited making them black and white to appear similar to the link artist for this work further up. I really like how I Focus on the detail of the face and sometimes used to mirror to show how several reflections could take place also to let however is looking at the photos decide on what that image looks like to them using their imagination.
www: I have shown my understanding for this work and how I can edit my images, making them connect to what the link artist above has done, I think I have also demonstrated distortion well through these images.
Ebi:I think I could possibly use more items to show a different side to distortion in water,i could also see what the images would look like in colour.

Reflections on water
Slava Semeniuta
Slava Selenita is an artist and photographer who really likes the idea of neon colours in nature and thats what he tries to focus on in her images. He finds the idea of neon colour magical and mysterious and has tried to create a sense of this throughout all of his work. Slava also focuses on turning models into ''cosmic creatures'' however for this work below he has focused on the reflection of light in water, as you can see below neon light reflected in puddles.
First Response
For my first response I have taken these images at school. I took coloured sheets of acrylic and a section of a black bin liner, placed the liner in the tray and added water, I then turned of the light to make the images seem dark and focus on the water reflection. I placed the pieces of plastic in the water and using the torch helped reflect them onto the water, I also used glow sticks for this.
Edits
Here are the edits I have chosen and created.I did this by turning out the lights and using a torch, a bin liner and some coloured acrylic to create the effect of neon reflection on water. I placed a tray in a dark room and cover the top with a black bin liner, then I filled it with water and chose the pieces of coloured acrylic to reflect on the water with a torch. Once I had taken these images I opened them into photoshop and changed things such as the contrast or brightness, this makes the image more affective and connects to the work of the link artist.
www: I created several reflection in water using neon colours and a dark background which is something that the link artist focused on mainly.
Ebi: I could use a wider range of colours to make my images differ, or I could shoot in different locations for examples outside in the night.

Strands
Erika Diettes
Clothes in water
Erika Diettes is a visual artist who has a masters degree in anthropology and has created a series of work called Drifting away. This work shows several different items of clothes in water to draw attention to some of the victims of forced disappearances of the columbian armed conflict. I have chosen this strand as I think it fits reflection well and I like how the clothes look animated or drawn in the water. This inspired me a lot and I really liked the creativity involved so I aim for a similar outcome in some of my images.
Edits
Below are some examples of my work for this stand, I used items of clothing such as a vest, jeans a jumper and some denim shorts. I placed these clothes into a bath to make them seem animated similarly to Erika Diettes. For some of these images I splashed around using my hand in the water to get the light reflection shots similar to the link artist I think this is quite successful and I have shown some of my pieces in the contact sheet below.
These are some of my best images from the ones took for the strand clothes in water. I have edited these on photoshop to make the water and colour of the clothes stand out. I really like the contrast in these images and how when you place items of clothing into the water baby come slightly darker, this was very captivating for this work and made the outcome a lot more successful.
www: I have created similar pieces of work that the link artist has and shown several different examples.
EBI: I could try to include more colour to possibly make the images stand out more or shoot in different locations with the clothes and water.

Tigran Tsitighdzyan
Reflection with hands
Tigran Tsitighdzyan is an New-york based artist and painter. Tigran's work mixes portrait and surrealism in a profound way. And by the age of ten his work was chosen to feature in a solo exhibition. The series of work below by this artist are paintings and I wanted to try and recreate them in the form of photographs. I think his work Is powerful and at first I didn't realise it was a painting. I really like how intricate this idea was and a timetable to experiment further on Photo shop.
Edits
This is a contact sheet that I have created for this strand on Hand reflection, for this I took several images of models looking straight down the lens and their hands so there could be reflected in-front of their face, I have shown every image before the final edits I created. I also experimented with dark and light backgrounds for each image and worked out which ones would be the best to use.
Below are my edits that I have created for this stand, on photoshop. I wanted to try and have each model with their hands in front of their face and similarly to the link Artis have the facial features showing despite being obstructed. I did this by layering the two images and changing the opacity so that both images can be seen in the final image. I think the most successful image is the one in the middle as it seems very realistic and has blended well whereas, the other two could be seen more as ghosts or very see-through hands and being placed on top of the models image.
Here are step by step instructions on the process of making these images and how I created them above in photoshop.

Reflection with hands developed
I wanted to develop this idea further as I thought I could try to achieve more and having learnt more on photo shop improve the quality of the images and how to make them seem closer to the link artist.
Christopher Relander- nature reflection
Christopher Relander is a 28 year old photographer from Finland who was initially interested in art however discovered that he loved photography while serving in the marines.HIs work had been used by very successful companies such as Adobe and Nikon he has also been featured in many magazines. The examples of his work below are pictures from a series of digital work/photographs called 'we are nature'. Relander effectively uses elements and principles of design as we all as media/art.Overall this is a piece about Relander's view that human being are part of nature.I really like this type of work as although, it can be seen as busy the colour schemes and subtle silhouettes of the people create a peaceful effect.
Edits
Here are some contacts sheets and edits of the developed hand reflection which I worked on for the mock exam day. I really like how's images turned out however I still believe they could be edited more like the link artist and have the portrait blend more with the background. I especially want to work on making hand stand out more but blend in nicely with my models Face all the nature images that I have taken.
Artist and me
Here is my artist and me. I have compared the artists work to mine and have followed a similar style, creating an image that involves both a hand but also nature (trees) and a person all merged in. Below I have shown how I created these on photoshop. I have tried to make all the images within the hand stand out like the link artist has however I think I could do this better next time. I also think the outline of the hand is slightly bumpy and I could of made that better to reflect the work of the link artist.
Below are the step by step instructions on how to create the image of the hand, nature and model above in the artist and me section.
Mock Final Piece
These are the images but I thought looked best for the mock final piece however could be edited slightly better to see more realistic.
www: I have developed my first strand, and created several new edits made up of 2-3 images all of which connect to the link artist.
EBI: I could try to create some in colour to make it more interesting, or like the link artist use different things within nature such as rocks or water.

Hand reflection developed again
Here I decided to develop hand reflection again as I didn't feel I had created pieces on photo shop to the best of my ability. I needed to work on blending the model with the background and the nature. For example the link artists have successfully managed to make it appear that the model's head is also part of the tree. This is what I want to achieve as it looks much more professional and crisper.
Edits
Here are two of the edits that I really liked and I feel have been much more successfully edited on photo shop to make the head of the model seem like a part of the tree. I have also experimented with making part of the model's head relate to architecture and wanted to experiment with the idea to possibly blend it together with the idea of nature all using the hand again.
Here is the step-by-step instructions of how to create two images above on photo shop. I learnt to this by experimenting with photo shop and also by searching some of these methods on the Internet.
